Introducing the Hythe & Waterside Dementia Friendly Group

 SO45 Online have recently met and spoken to Sally Wood and her daughter Sharon Ellery representing the newly formed Hythe & Waterside Dementia Friendly Group.

church4Both ladies are very passionate about this group and the benefits it can provide for local people suffering from Dementia or indeed caring for a family member or friend affected by Dementia.

This local Dementia Friendly Group will be the local good cause beneficiary of the SO45 Online Community Giving Lottery for January. Tickets on SALE now….£2 a ticket! 50% will go to a cash winner and this month 50% will go to the Hythe & Waterside Dementia Friendly Group.

What are they looking to provide for the local community?

Here is a summary of what services they are looking to provide and the benefits these support services will bring for local people affeceted by Dementia:

Support carers and those living with dementia:

Description: To set up a drop-in support group for carers and those living with dementia. The group should be accessable, welcoming and non-judgemental.

Description: To work closely with the Alzheimer’s Society offering information and support.

On 5th November 2014 – A new monthly drop-in started at Hythe Library and meets the first Wednesday of every month. The group is attended by carers and those living with dementia. A representative from the Alzheimer’s Society attends each meeting offering information and advice.

Signposting to dementia friendly services:

Description: To maintain and promote an up-to-date list of all the dementia services available to those living in the Hythe & Waterside area

Description: To work closely with the Alzheimer’s Society and all community groups to keep people living with dementia in the Hythe & Waterside area and their carers up to date with services available.

They are currently working with Andover Mind to collate a up-to-date list of dementia friendly services.

Supply local news and information on dementia:

Description: To gather and regularly report dementia news and updates relevant to those people in the Hythe & Waterside area

Description: Create Dementia Champions in the Hythe & Waterside area to spread the word and to set up a Facebook group to provide up to date information while reporting on activities through local press.

They provide an article to The Herald for every publication on events and promote articles etc via our Facebook Group: Dementia Support UK. A number of our committee are Dementia Champions, a number of awareness session have been held in our area and promoted via local press and Facebook.

Dementia Friendly businesses:

Description: To support and promote those businesses in the Hythe & Waterside area who are also part of the Hampshire Dementia Action Alliance (HDAA) and committed to developing Hythe & Waterside as a Dementia Friendly Community

Description: To support and promote the community of the Hythe & Waterside area to become part of the HDAA by setting up Dementia Friends courses readily accessible to all.

We hope to encourage ALL businsses in Hythe & Waterside to become Dementia Friendly. Some businesses have shown and interest. A number of national chains are already committed: Hythe Library, Boots, Lloyds Bank.

Consultation & Engagement of people with Dementia and their carers:

Description: To listen, document and share the needs of those people living with dementia in response to our work

Description: To become the voice of those people living with dementia the Hythe & Waterside area and to ensure their individual needs are addressed.

We currently consult with carers and those living with dementia via our monthly drop-in support group. We hope to force closer links with other groups.

Maintaining links with local organisations in order to cascade dementia related information throughout the Hythe & Waterside area:

Description: Information about new services, support groups and events can be transmitted to as many residents of the Hythe & Waterside area as possible.

We are very new, the committee was only formed in June 2014 once we have established ourselves we hope to make links with lots of local organisations.

Maintaining links with other Dementia Action Groups in the New Forest via email and attendance at the New Forest Dementia Network:

Description: To enable the sharing of best practice and lessons learnt through local Dementia Action Groups

At least one member of our committee attend the New Forest Dementia Network.
