Lottery money goes to MS cause for February

Februarys SO45 Lottery receivers will be The Lymington & District branch of the Multiple Sclerosis and specifically for the SO45 users of which a THIRD of its members are from the SO45 area.

The Lymington & District branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society was founded in 1989 and very quickly emcompassed the SO45 area of the Waterside.

SO45 membersThey are run entirely by volunteers and receive no funding from the National Society.   All their funds have been either raised within the branch or from other charities and individuals who have wanted to support the work they do to help all those in their ‘patch’ regardless of membership, with or affected by MS.

Multiple Sclerosis is the most common neurological disease of young adults in the UK , to date there is no known cause and no cure. The impact on individuals and families is profound.

The aim of the branches within the Society is to offer support, information and practical help : such as minor aids and equipment, grants for holidays & respite care and support groups – including exercise classes, massage, peer support groups and trying to enhance general quality of life and wellbeing.

SO45 therapyMembers from SO45 area would like to be able to access the neuro – physiotherapy groups that are run in Lymington fortnightly on a Thursday afternoon. Exercise is well – proven to be of huge benefit to MSers and they would like to be able to use a minibus to transport them over . This would save on individual cars being driven over and also allow a number of members who would like to, come to physio but do not as they are unable to get into others cars because of their disability, or it is inappropriate to expect individuals to manage another with

SO45 members make up about 1/3 of the branch and a committee review has agreed that funds raised from the SO45 Lottery will be spent on the following:

1)  Members from SO45 area would like to be able to access the neuro – physiotherapy groups that are run in Lymington fortnightly on a Thursday afternoon. Exercise is well – proven to be of huge benefit to MSers and they would like to be able to use a minibus to transport them over . This would save on individual cars being driven over and also allow a number of members who would like to, come to physio but do not as they are unable to get into others cars because of their disability, or it is inappropriate to expect individuals to manage another with quite severe MS. The minibus ( which we hire from Community First) has a trained driver and escort for safety . Being able to pay for the minibus would not only allow members with MS to come to physio but also allow their carers to either have a much needed break at home or come over on the minibus and join the Carer’s tea group we run concurrently .

2) Several members attend the Gang Warily disabled exercise group – we would like to be able to enable them to continue with this form of exercise which is very different from the Neuro Physio we offer and once the scheme was known, to encourage others to attend.

As with each months cause or charity, we feel that this is a worth while project to support.
